My
mom has always told me that I have to try my best because if I do not, she will
send me to Mexico to live and work there. Through many stories of her life she
has given me an insight of how simple my life is compared to hers when she was
my age. My mother started working when she was ten years old in order to help
bring income into her household. In the mornings, she would attend school, and
then she would head to work for the rest of the day. It was a stressful life
due to the constant lack of money, and unfortunately she had to quit attending
school in order to start working full time. When I was in elementary school,
she would always spend hours with me on my homework to the point when I would
start crying. Sometimes I would go to sleep late because my mom wanted my
homework to be complete and perfect. The endless piles of homework and my
mother’s persistence taught me to complete an assignment fully, not just for
school, but for life. My mother’s parenting taught me was that trying is not
enough, and that in order to fully succeed I had to accomplish something and
not just try. For example, when I was in middle school, I received my first “C”,
and it happened to be in my algebra class. When my mom saw my average grade she
yelled at me for a long time. I tried to explain that it was a difficult class
and that I was trying my best, but she told me that was not enough. She said I
had to change my grade by the next progress report, and that final. Since then
I have put my best effort towards everything I do and I have been successful. When
I received a scholarship for having a high G.P.A. in high school, I realized
that my mother was telling the truth and that her advice and teaching was
valuable. My mother’s way of teaching me might be strict, but I know that she
does this in order for me to be the best person I can be. Without my mother, my
education today would not be the same, and I would go through life without any
type of guidance.
